EMILY TOUSAW PSYCHOTHERAPY
Individual and Couple/Relational Therapy

Home: Welcome
About Me

I grew up in a big and busy family and have always been interested in human connection. I've never been someone who has a 'work self' that is different from their 'true self': I am authentic in sessions and am told that my approach is real, warm, relaxed, and respectful. I have been a therapy client and understand the importance of feeling safe and supported, especially when sharing issues or stories that may feel difficult or embarrassing or scary. My approach is thoughtful, social justice- and feminist-informed, creative, and at times humorous.

I like emotions and I like to understand them. I listen for verbal stories and I pay attention to the stories the body is carrying or sharing (or working hard to contain). I like getting to know people's unique resources and talents and to understand the different systems that - for better or worse - influence their lives. Ultimately, I hope to meet you where you are, to really hear you, and to help you feel better. I hold people and their experiences with great care.

I am a cis woman and a white settler. I am committed to inclusivity and I welcome folks from diverse cultures, races, gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities, relationship styles, religions, and economic backgrounds. I also understand and respect that not all folks are comfortable with or interested in working with a white cis therapist. If we meet and I'm not the right fit for you, I can help to find someone who is.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. I have a Master of Science in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Guelph and a Master of Arts in Conflict Studies from St. Paul University. I am a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (helping the body to heal trauma). My practice draws on Emotionally Focused, Narrative, Dialogic, Solution Focused, Internal Family Systems, and sex therapies. I work with adults and older teens in individual or couple/relational configurations.

When I am not practicing therapy, I spend my time with my young kiddo and partner. I'm a knitter and a reader and an outdoor enthusiast. I split my time between Ontario and BC. As such, I currently see clients virtually or by phone.
